#6 Merrimack Clinches Two Seed for Northeast-10 Playoffs With 20-5 Victory at Assumption

WORCESTER, MA –The #6 Merrimack men's lacrosse team locked up the #2 seed for the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference playoffs with a 20-5 victory over the Assumption Greyhounds on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors will host the winner of Adelphi and Bentley on Friday, May 4 at 4:00 p.m. in the semifinals at Martone-Mejail Field.

"We stayed focused today from the start of the game until the finish and it really showed," said head coach Mike Morgan. "Clinching the two seed and a first round bye will allow us to make any adjustments we need to make over the next couple of days."

Reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, Greg Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.) continued his outstanding play on Saturday as he connected on a game-high seven goals and two assists. Leading scorer Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ) racked up six goals and four assists, giving him 47 goals on the season, ranking him first in the Northeast-10. DJ Brown (Huntington, NY) found the back of the net once and recorded three assists.

The Warriors opened up the game on a 6-0 scoring run as Lunney found the back of the net three times, Melaugh recorded two goals and Paul Jones (Guilderland, NY) scored his ninth goal of the season. Assumption ended the Warriors run with their first goal of the game with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter.

The Greyhounds tacked on two more goals to start the second period to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Warriors. Melaugh ended the run with his third goal of the game after a nice pass from Lunney and the Warriors finished off the opening half on a 6-0 run to make the score 12-3 at halftime. Melaugh, Lunney and Jones once again were the goal scorers during the run for Merrimack.

Merrimack held the 38-7 advantage in shots in the opening half and they were also successful on eight of nine clearing attempts. The Warriors won 10 of 17 faceoff's and also caused eight turnovers through the first 30 minutes.

Merrimack opened up the second half with another scoring run as they scored four unanswered goals. Brown scored the first goal of the half after a nice pass from Mike Perdie (Wading River, NY). Melaugh and Lunney combined for the next three goals to give the Warriors the 16-3 lead.

The Greyhounds opened up the fourth period with their fourth goal of the day but the Warriors had the quick response as Jordan Tiger (Ridgefield, CT) picked up his third goal of the season.  Assumption made the score 17-5 just under 10 seconds later as Chris Noyes fired one past Morgan Green (Portsmouth, RI).

Terence Barclay (Babylon, NY) beat the Assumption goalie for the quick response as Nick Vazquez (Haverhill, Mass.) found Barclay open in front of the net. Vazquez and Ryan Hunt (Scarborough, ME) finished off the afternoon with the final two goals of the game; Hunt's tally was his first career goal.

Patrick Coskren (Norwood, Mass.) finished off his impressive afternoon winning 11 of 17 faceoff's, causing a turnover and scooping up a groundball. Jones finished with two goals and an assist to give him 38 points on the season, including a team-high 28 assists. Paul Gallagher (Simsbury, CT) recorded three assists and scooped up two groundballs. Green picked up his 12th victory of the season, making five saves.

Merrimack finished the game holding the 61-21 advantage in shots and 29-19 advantage in groundballs. Merrimack caused 22 Assumption turnovers and going 6-15 on man-up opportunities.

Merrimack (12-2, 8-2 NE-10) clinched the #2 seed in the Northeast-10 playoffs and will host the winner of Bentley and Adelphi in the semifinals at Martone-Mejail Field on Friday, May 4 at 4:00 p.m.
