RIDGEFIELD, CT - The #4 Merrimack men's lacrosse team cruised to a 14-6 non-conference victory over Rollins Thursday evening at Ridgefield High School's Tiger Hollow Stadium.
The Warriors were led offensively by Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ) who finished the night with four goals and one assist. Greg Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.) tallied three goals and three helpers on the night for the Warriors. Freshman Jamie Shand (Massapequa, NY) picked up his first career goal and also recorded a team-high four assists in the victory.
The Warriors started off the game quick with a scoring strike 15 seconds into the opening half as Mike Perdie (Wading River, NY) found the back of the net off of a great individual move to get free. The Warriors would rack up three more first period goals as Lunney, Jordan Tiger (Ridgefield, CT) and Matt Marini (Trumbull, CT) all scored to give Merrimack the 4-0 advantage after one period of play.
Perdie would extend the Warriors lead to 5-0 after a nice pass from Shand set him up in front of the net all alone. The tars would respond with their first goal of the game less that 20 seconds later as Peter Harvey scored after he won the faceoff.
Melaugh would score the final two goals of the opening half off of Shand passes to give the Warriors the 7-1 lead heading into halftime. The Warriors held the advantage in shots in the first half 33-12.
The Warriors opened up the second half of play with a 4-0 run as Paul Jones (Guilderland, NY) started the run less than a minute into the third period as he found the back of the net after a Perdie assist. Melaugh, Shand and Lunney connected on the other three goals during the run for the Warriors as the score was extended to 11-1 in favor of Merrimack.
Rollins connected on a goal to put the Warriors scoring streak to an end but Lunney scored less than 30 second later to give the Warriors the 12-2 advantage.
Rollins would connect on the final four goals of the night to make the score 14-6.
The Warriors would finish the game holding the advantage in shots 51-31 and groundballs 33-27. Rollins would win the faceoff battle 15-9. The Warriors finished the game going 3-6 in extra man opportunities while the Tars were held to 2-5 in those opportunities.
Peter Schielke (Ridgefield, CT) and Tiger played in front of their hometown crowds on Thursday night. Tiger scored for the Warriors while Schielke led the way defensively for the Warriors locking down the Tars offensive threats all night long. Perdie finished off his night with two goals and one assist for the Warriors in the victory.
Merrimack goalie Morgan Green (Portsmouth, RI) improved to 3-0 on the season after recording six saves while backup goaltender Connor Reagan (East Lyme, CT) recorded four saves in the final period of action to preserve the victory. Rollins Andrew Sheerin made 13 saves for the Tars in the defeat.
Up next, Merrimack (3-0) will travel to face Saint Rose in the first Northeast-10 Conference tilt of the 2012 campaign at 4:30 pm.
