BALTIMORE, MD – The #6 Merrimack men's lacrosse team defeated Limestone by the score of 12-11 in a non conference showdown on Saturday afternoon. Greg Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.) scored with 12.8 seconds remaining in the game to give the Warriors the victory.
Merrimack (2-0) will stay on the road for their next contest against Rollins on Thursday March 22 at 7 pm. The game will be played at Ridgefield high school in Connecticut.
"We battled today" said head coach Mike Morgan. " We came out strong in the second half and I am excited to see what we can do the rest of the season."
Melaugh led the way for the Warriors as he recorded five goals and an assist on the afternoon. DJ Brown (Huntington, NY) recorded three goals in his first action of the season for the Warriors. Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ) and Mike Perdie (Wading River, NY) each contributed with two goals in the victory. Freshman Jamie Shand (Massapequa, NY) picked up an assist and leads the team with nine points through two games.
Merrimack got off to the early lead as they scored the first three goals of the afternoon. The Warriors took the 7-5 lead into halftime before falling behind 10-8 at the end of the third.
The Warriors outscored Limestone 4-1 in the final quarter to give them the top-10 showdown victory on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Morgan Green (Portsmouth, RI) had a great day between the pipes for the Warriors as he recorded 14 saves in his second win of the young season. Defensively Merrimack was led by Brandon Waiter (Westport, CT), who locked down Limestone's top offensive threat all afternoon and scooped up a team-high six groundballs. Peter Schielke (Ridgefield, CT) led the team in caused turnovers with five on the day.
Merrimack was accompanied by Father Mark Ivany of St Pius X Catholic Church (Bowie, MD) as their honorary chaplain, Merrimack alum (2000). Mark was an All American defender as well as captain for the Warriors in 2000.
