Lunney, Spinales Major Honors Headline Mens Lacrosse All-Conference Team
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Six Merrimack players were named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference team, including Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ) and Cory Spinale (Wakefield, MA), who were named to the NE-10 Freshman and Goaltender of the Year respectively.
Lunney leads the conference with 3.00 goals per game (40 total) and is second in total points with 3.79 per game (53). He ranks third among Division II players in goals per game. Lunney has a point in all 14 games this season and goals in 11, including a seven-goal performance in a 10-6 win at Pace.
The freshman was also named to the all-conference second-team and rookie team.
Spinale, also the Northeast-10 Goalkeeper of the Year in 2008, leads the conference and is fourth nationally in save percentage (.644) and is second in the NE-10 and fifth nationally in goals-against average (6.33). A Preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, he also was named to the all-conference first-team for the second time in his career (also in 2008) and concludes his three-year Warrior career with three all-conference honors in as many years.
Senior captain Mark Webber (Mansfield, MA) was also named to the first team. A second-team selection in 2009, Webber tallied 11 goals and 23 points this season, registering points in 11 of 14 games.
In addition to Lunney, Shane Mahar (Slingerlands, NY), Peter Schielke (Ridgefield, CT), and Nick Maggio (Winchester, MA) were second-team selections.
Mahar, a Preseason All-American defender, is second on the team with 22 caused turnovers in just 11 games. He added an assist at Pace and 24 ground balls, including a season-high four against the Setters.
Schielke, a sophomore defender, teamed with Mahar to anchor the conference’s second-best defense, tallying a team-best 24 caused turnovers. He added three assists and 22 ground balls while starting in all 14 games.
Maggio, who was an all-rookie selection in 2009, won 61% of his draws, matching his output from last year and remains one of the nation’s best at draws. He also added three goals and six points, including two goals in a 6-5 victory over Adelphi. The sophomore tallied a team-best 81 ground balls.
Merrimack tied with Le Moyne for a conference-best six all-conference selections.
Le Moyne’s Matt Chadderdon was named the Player of the Year, while Saint Anselm’s Kevin DeBenedetto was the Defensive Player of the Year. AIC’s Shannon Sligo was the NE-10 Coach of the Year.
Merrimack, who finished 11-3 and in second place in the Northeast-10 for the second straight season, will host the winner of #3 Adelphi/#6 Saint Anselm on Friday at Warrior Field.
