NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Head coach Mark Dennehy of the Merrimack College men's ice hockey team has announced that a pair of sophomore defensemen have been assistant captains, as fellow blueliners Marc Biega (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) and Jared Kolquist (Hermantown, Minn.) will each wear an 'A' for the remainder of the regular season.
"Marc and Jared have been two of our most consistent and best performers on the ice, in the weight room and in the locker room," Denney stated. "This is simply recognition that they have their teammates' respect. They will help to support the good job both [senior captain] Brian [Christie] and [junior assistant captain Hampus [Gustafsson] have already been doing."
The duo will join current captain and senior Brian Christie (West Chester, Pa.) and current assistant captain and junior Hampus Gustafsson (Ljungby, Sweden) to form a quartet of Warrior captains. The last time Merrimack had four captains was during the 2013-14 season, when the team was guided by Class of 2014 graduates Jordan Heywood (C), Mike Collins (A), Brendan Ellis (A) and Rhett Bly (A).
Both sophomores have been models of consistency over the course of their young careers. Each has played in all 25 games to date this season, while Biega has appeared in all 63 games that Merrimack has played since arriving on campus. Kolquist is close behind with 60 career games in that span.
Biega has registered six points (1g, 5a) in 25 games this season – including one power play goal – while firing a team-high 56 shots on net. He has a career 4-5—19 scoring line. Kolquist, meanwhile, has posted a career-high nine points on a goal and eight assists so far this season while putting 55 shots on net. In 60 games, he has registered 14 points (3g, 11a).
