NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack men's hockey team had a school record 14 student-athletes receive Hockey East All-Academic Team accolades as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Merrimack had the most players represented, led by Ryan Flanigan (Rochester, NY), who was named to the Hockey East Academic All-Star team with a 4.00 GPA, highest among all league forwards. Flanigan, the Warriors 2011-12 assistant captain, is a four-time Hockey East All-Academic honoree. Jordan Heywood (Regina, SK), a captain for 2012-13, recorded the highest GPA of any league defenseman. Heywood is a two-time All-Academic honoree.
Also selected to the squad for the third time was graduating senior Karl Stollery (Camrose, Alberta). Jeff Velleca (Waterbury, CT), Carter Madsen (Calgary, Alberta), who both graduated in May, and Tom McCarthy (Maple Grove, MN), were also named to the team for the second time.
Eight Warriors, Rhett Bly (Regina, SK), Brandon Brodhag (Brooklyn Park, MN), Joe Cannata (Wakefield, Mass.), Simon Demers (St. Etienne de Lauzon, Quebec), Quinn Gould (Fort McMurray, Alberta), Justin Mansfield (Arlington, Mass.), Sam Marotta (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Elliott Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta), were selected to the team for the first time.
In all, 100 student-athletes were named to the 2011-12 All-Academic team. Each student-athlete achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in each of two academic periods during which he actively competed.
