NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Following his first career start in which he earned a shutout and added an assist, sophomore goaltender Sam Marotta (Bridgewater, MA) was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week.
Marotta made 25 saves in a 5-0 win over Connecticut Saturday. He notched his first collegiate assist after stopping a short-handed breakaway which resulted in a goal by Jeff Velleca (Waterbury, CT).
Marotta appeared in seven regular season games last year, but his only start was in an exhibition game against the Under-20 Sweden Team which Merrimack won 4-1.
Merrimack was ranked ninth in both national polls this week, the second highest ranking of any Hockey East school.
Off to its best start since 1993-94 at 4-0, Merrimack (4-0, 2-0 HEA) heads to Vermont next weekend for a pair of games against the Catamounts at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
