Merrimack and ESPN Radio Ink Deal to Broadcast Hockey Games

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Merrimack College and ESPN Radio in Boston have agreed on a contract to air Merrimack hockey home and away games for the 2009-10 season on ESPN 1400 AM based in Lowell, Mass.

The partnership marks a return to the radio airwaves for the Merrimack hockey program after a five-year absence. Each game broadcast will be highlighted by a pre-game and post-game show, and the entire broadcast will also be available online.

“We are very excited to add Merrimack hockey to the ESPN Radio Boston family,” said Al Turner, station manager at ESPN Radio Boston. “We are always looking for opportunities to add new quality sports programming for our listeners in the greater Boston area, and we think we have found an excellent partner in Merrimack. Hockey East is the top collegiate conference in the nation, and we are thrilled to be able to provide a new outlet for fans of Merrimack hockey to follow the Warriors all season”.

“Our new partnership with ESPN will allow us to better serve our fans and create new Merrimack hockey supporters throughout the region,” said Director of Athletics Glenn Hofmann. “After over one million in renovations to Lawler Arena this offseason, we are eager for our student-athletes to take to the ice for the 2009-10 campaign, and we are looking forward to working with ESPN Radio Boston.”

John Leahy will return for his fifth season behind the microphone as the play-by-play announcer for the Warriors. After working solo for two seasons, Leahy will be joined this season by color analyst Mike Machnik, Senior Writer and Editor for College Hockey News online.

Merrimack opens the 2009-10 campaign at North Dakota on October 9 and 10 in Grand Forks before returning home to battle Holy Cross on October 16 at 7 p.m. at Lawler Arena in North Andover.
