Braithwaite Named Co-Top Scholar Athlete; 15 Others Named to Team

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Junior Andrew Braithwaite
(Kingston, Ontario) was named the Hockey East Co-Top
Scholar Athlete of the Year Monday while 15 of his teammates were
named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
This marks the second time in three years that Braithwaite, who
posted a perfect 4.00 grade-point-average, has earned a share of
the Top Scholar Athlete Award. Since the award’s inception 18
years ago in the 1991-92 season, a Merrimack athlete has received
the honor nine times, most among all Hockey East schools.
In all, 16 Warriors were named to the team, most among the 10
Hockey East schools.
Braithwaite, Grant Farrell (Calgary, Alberta) and
J.C. Robitaille (Des Ruisseaux, Quebec) were named
to the team for the third time, while Joe Cucci (Melrose
Park, IL), John Goebel (Parma, OH), Matt Moulakelis (Barrington,
IL), and Francois Ouimet (Lorraine,
Quebec) each were selected for the second time.
First time selections included Fraser Allan (North
Battleford, Sask.), Chris Barton (Calgary, Alberta), Justin
Bonitatibus (Walpole, MA), Ryan Flanigan (Rochester, NY), Carter
Madsen (Calgary, Alberta), Adam Ross (Red Deer, Alberta), Karl
Stollery (Camrose, Alberta), Brandon Sadlowski (St. Paul,
Alberta) and Patrick Watson (Waltham,
MA).
Braithwaite, who is a three-time Hockey East All-Star honoree,
shares the Top-Scholar Athlete honor with Lowell forward Frank
Stegnar, who also recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in the 2008-09
academic year.
The University of Maine totaled 13 selections, second most to the
Warriors, with Massachusetts (12), Northeastern (11) and Lowell
(10) also in double figures.
A league-record 94 student-athletes were named to the All-Academic
Team. Each student-athlete that received a grade-point-average of
3.0 or better was named to the team.
