Greyhounds Charge Past Men's Basketball, 75-66, Saturday Afternoon

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Merrimack College men's basketball team dropped a tough-fought battle to Northeast-10 rival Assumption College Saturday afternoon, 75-66, at Hammel Court.

How It Happened

Sophomore forward Anthony Barry (Uxbridge, Mass.) led the Warriors with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Fellow classmates Gelvis Solano (New York, N.Y.) and Troy Hammel (Valencia, Calif.) contributed 12 points each, while Hammel posted five assists. Sophomore JT Strickland (Laurel, Md.) added nine points and three assists.

In the opening minutes of the game, Merrimack and Assumption traded baskets and tied the game at 4-all. After a made 3-pointer from Jimmy Zenevitch, the Greyhounds went on an 8-5 run extending their lead to four (12-9) with 15:11 to play in the first.

Merrimack rallied back to tie Assumption at 12-12 after a made free throw from Barry. But, Assumption answered right back with a 6-0 run to bring the score to 18-12 with 12:35 left to go on the clock. Strickland cut the Greyhounds lead to five after he hit a basket from long range, forcing the Greyhounds to take a timeout with 8:22 on the clock.

After the timeout, Assumption jumped out to its largest lead of the game (11), leading 33-22 with five minutes remaining in the first. With the two minute mark approaching, the Warriors continued to trail the Greyhounds, 35-26, after back-to-back free throws from Barry.

The Warriors ended the half trailing the Greyhounds, 40-28. Merrimack finished the half shooting only 26.7 percent (8-for-30) from the field, while Assumption shot 60.0 percent (15-for-25) from the floor. Barry led the Warriors in the first half with seven points and five rebounds. Marcus Murray and Jimmy Zenevitch lead the Greyhounds with 14 points each.

Assumption opened up the second with a made jumper from Zenevitch but Hammel answered back going 3-for-3 from line bringing the score to 42-31. With 16:16 left to play in regulation, Solano nailed a straightaway three to cut the Greyhounds lead to three (42-39). Assumption quickly answered back and extended its lead to nine (50-41) after a Marcus Murray made free throw.

With four minutes remaining in regulation, Merrimack trailed Assumption, 62-56, after a made layup from Tim Kasper. The Warriors continued to chip away at Assumption's lead, but after a made layup from Murray, the Greyhounds extended their lead to nine (69-60).

The Warriors were unable to stop the Greyhounds' offense from earning their first conference win of the season, 75-66.

Marcus Murray led the Greyhounds with 27 points, six assists, and two steals. Assumption finsihed the game shooting 49.0 percent (24-for-49) from the field and 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from long range.

A Closer Look

  • The Warriors went 21-for-59 (35.6 percent) from the floor and went 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) from the free throw line.
  • The Greyhounds outrebounded the Warriors, 36-30, as well as postint 30 point in the paint.
  • Merrimack forced 13 Greyhounds turnovers, while scoring 14 points off the turnovers.
  • Assumption's bench posted 30 points in the victory.
