MERRIMACK MEN'S BASKETBALL ANNOUNCES 2013-14 SCHEDULE
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Highlighted by the home opener against reigning NCAA East Regional champion Franklin Pierce and a February home tilt against reigning league champion Southern New Hampshire, 34th-year head coach Bert Hammel is pleased to unveil the 2013-14 Merrimack men's basketball schedule.
Featuring a 26-game regular season slate that includes 11 home games and one season-opening tournament, the Warriors will return to the court this winter looking to return to the Northeast-10 Championships following a one-year absence in 2012-13.
With the return of three of last year's top-five scorers, including Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team member Gelvis Solano (New York, N.Y.) and backcourt mate JT Strickland (Lauren, Md.), as well as rising senior Kevin Regan (Philadelphia, Pa.) and a number of other key components in a very young lineup last winter, Merrimack should be primed for a return to the postseason.
The journey begins on Friday, Nov. 8, when the 64th season of Merrimack men's basketball gets underway with the Bentley Tip-Off Classic. Merrimack will be competing in the season-opening tournament for the fourth straight season, and the Warriors have gone 6-0 in the two-game weekend competition in the last three seasons, including back-to-back victories over Dominican and Caldwell last year.
Then, the Warriors welcome reigning regional champion Franklin Pierce to Hammel Court for a pre-Thanksgiving tilt on Saturday, Nov. 23, accounting for Merrimack's only home game in the month of November.
Merrimack kicks off December with home bouts against league foes Bentley (Dec. 4) and Assumption (Dec. 7) before back-to-back road games. The Warriors round out the final month of 2013 with a non-conference home showdown against New Haven on Dec. 19.
Moving into the New Year, Merrimack hits the road for three consecutive road bouts starting with non-league battles at Dowling (Jan. 3) and LIU Post (Jan. 4). Then after returning to league play against Pace (Jan. 8), Merrimack welcomes Saint Rose on Jan. 14. Following another two-game road trip, the Navy and Gold host Adelphi (Jan. 25) and Southern Connecticut (Jan. 28) to close out January.
The month of February is highlighted by the program's annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Feb. 8, as countless graduates from the team's rich history return to the court for a friendly exhibition between past and present Warriors before Merrimack hosts reigning league champion Southern New Hampshire.
Finally, Merrimack concludes the regular season on Senior Night, as the Warriors look to end the year on a high note on Tuesday, Feb. 25 against Saint Michael's before the Northeast-10 Championships begin the following week.
