Men’s Basketball Ninth in Season’s First Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The Merrimack men's basketball team is ranked ninth in the East Region as the first regional rankings of the 2011-12 season were released Wednesday evening. The Warriors are one of six teams from the Northeast-10 Conference to appear in the regional rankings.

Eight teams from each of the nation's eight regions will be selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament. The three conference-tournament winners in the East Region each receive an automatic bid. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show is scheduled for March 4.

Merrimack owns a 14-10 overall record with an 11-9 mark in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Warriors are tied for fifth-place in the league standings with Bentley and Pace.

Franklin Pierce claimed the top slot in the regional rankings while Adelphi earned the second spot as each team owns an 18-6 record on the year. District of Columbia, ranked No. 23 in the NABC National Poll, garnered third in the regional rankings with a 20-3 mark.

UMass Lowell took fourth with an overall record of 16-8 and Philadelphia claimed fifth with a 16-7 record. Bloomfield, last season's East Regional champion, garnered the sixth slot in the regional rankings with a 19-6 mark on the year.

With a 15-9 record on the season, Bentley grabbed the seventh spot in the East Region. Stonehill was tabbed eighth in the ranking as it owns a 16-8 mark this year. C.W. Post rounded out the top 10 with the final slot as it sports an overall record of 18-5.

This season, Merrimack is 5-5 against teams in the East Region's first top 10 of the 2011-12 campaign. The Warriors have claimed wins over Franklin Pierce, UMass Lowell, Philadelphia, Bloomfield and Stonehill.

The Warriors have made eight trips to the NCAA Tournament, including three-straight appearances from 2008 to 2010. Merrimack last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2010 with a 20-8 record and advanced to the semifinals of the East Region bracket before losing to national-semifinalist Bentley.

Merrimack will take Southern New Hampshire February 18 in the penultimate game of the regular season. The Warriors will host the Penmen on Senior Day at Bert Hammel Court. Merrimack will close out the 2011-12 slate on the road at Franklin Pierce February 21.
