Merrimack Unveils 2014 Field Hockey Schedule
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Riding the North Region's longest-active streak of NCAA Final Four berths with three straight appearances, the Merrimack College field hockey team is pleased to unveil its full 2014 schedule, as announced by the Athletic Department Monday.
The Warriors will begin their pursuit of a fourth straight national semifinal berth – and more – when they head to Stonehill on Friday, Sept. 5, for a road tilt that doubles as a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament First Round, one that Merrimack won in overtime to return to the Final Four for the third year in a row.
In total, Merrimack's 17-game regular season slate features nine road games and three meetings with NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago. The top-six teams in the Northeast-10 Conference will square off for the conference crown starting Nov. 18 in First Round action; the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will host the league's semifinal round on Nov. 20, with the NE-10 Final falling two days later (Nov. 22) at the site of the highest-remaining seed.
After back-to-back road tilts to open the year, Merrimack will host Franklin Pierce for its home and conference opener on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 4:30 p.m. That contest opens up a season-long four-game homestand, as the Warriors will welcome Southern Connecticut (Sept. 19), Bentley (Sept. 23) and Assumption (Sept. 25) in non-conference action over that span.
Another highlight of the schedule falls on the final day of September, as Merrimack will make the trek up to Manchester, New Hampshire, to battle Southern New Hampshire for the first time in program history, as the Penmen begin their first season as a varsity program this fall.
Turning to October, Merrimack makes its only regular season trip to Long Island to face Adelphi on Oct. 4 before heading in the exact opposite direction to Colchester, Vermont, for a conference road test against Saint Michael's on Oct. 8.
Then, the Navy and Gold play host to reigning league champion and national runner-up LIU Post for the first time since a September 2010 meeting; the Warriors dropped a pair of one-goal contests – including a 1-0 defeat in the National Semifinal – last fall, and will be aiming for some payback this time around.
After that, Merrimack will host American Int'l (Oct. 17), Saint Anselm (Oct. 29), SNHU (Nov. 7) and Stonehill (Nov. 12) to round out the year, with road trips to Southern Connecticut (Oct. 25), Assumption (Oct. 31) and Bentley (Nov. 4) on the docket, as well.
