NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – With preseason expectations higher than ever before, the Merrimack field hockey team and fifth-year head coach Anne Rounce officially kicked off what promises to be an exciting 2012 campaign with the team's return to campus on Friday.
The Warriors will hold their first practice of the season later this afternoon as they work toward their highly anticipated season opener against reigning national champion West Chester on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Led by All-American seniors April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.), Jen Otis (Penacook, N.H.), Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) and Katie Zubkus (Dover, N.H.), the Warriors are fresh off a historic 2011 season that saw them post a school-record 17 wins en route to their first-ever Northeast-10 Conference regular season title and first appearance in both the NCAA Tournament and Final Four.
Merrimack opens the season with three-straight road contests, including the aforementioned bout at West Chester along with matches at East Stroudsburg (Sept. 2) and a non-conference showdown at Bentley (Sept. 6). The Warriors host St. Michael's on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in the first of seven home games over the course of the season.
