NORTH ANDOVER, MA – After the biggest one year turnaround in
program history, second year head coach Anne
Rounce was named the Division II Field Hockey Coach of the
Year by womensfieldhockey.com.
Rounce's National Coach of the Year honor is the first for a
Merrimack coach since women's soccer coach Gabe Mejail won the
National Collegiate Coach of the Year in 1986.
After five wins in her first year, Rounce led the Warriors to 13
wins this fall, including 8-1 at home, en route to the
school’s first ever field hockey postseason win over Adelphi
in the quarterfinals.
Rounce also engineered the nation’s fourth-ranked offense
(3.03 goals per game) with three forwards scoring over 30 points on
the year. Her defense also notched 15 defensive saves on the year,
good for second in the Conference.
With her first full class of recruits, Rounce brought in eventual
Conference Rookie of the Year April Daugherty (Lincoln,
RI), Second Team All-Conference Jen Otis
(Penacook, NH), stingy midfielder Katie Zubkus
(Dover, NH) and the league’s top goaltender in terms
of saves (196), Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA).
For her Division II-leading 16 assists and single-season program
record 40 points this fall, Daugherty was named the Division II
Rookie of the Year. She was also named to the All-American Second
Team.
Classmate Otis was also among 16 on the Division II All-Rookie
Team as a result of 36 points and team-best five game-winners on
the season.
In just their first year, Daugherty and Otis stormed the career
record books at Merrimack as the third and fourth on the all-time
points list, respectively. Kristen Belair ’07 is the current
program leader at 99 points on 40 goals and 19 assists, while
senior Jaclyn Germano (Westwood, MA) finished her
career this fall second all-time with 60 points.
