Field Hockey Earns #9 National Ranking

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – One win shy of tying the
program’s record for wins in a season (nine), the Merrimack
field hockey Warriors (8-5, 3-1 NE-10) have cracked the national
rankings at No. 9 in the 2009 Kookaburra/NFHCA Division II National
Coaches Poll, it was announced on Tuesday.
Second year Head Coach Anne Rounce has guided the
Warriors to their best home start (5-1) in program history, while
setting a record with six consecutive regular season wins (Sep. 5
– 19) along the way.
A quartet of freshmen has powered Merrimack’s push for a
playoff run in late October, as the Warriors sit in fourth place in
the Northeast-10 Conference.
Freshman April Daugherty (Lincoln, RI) leads not
only Merrimack, but the league in points (32) through 13 games this
fall. Classmate Jen Otis (Penacook, NH) is not far
behind in third with 24 points. First year Katie Zubkus
(Dover, NH) has also been a catalyst in the
Warriors’ midfield, anchoring a much-improved offense (3.27
goals per game), up more than two goals per game. Otis and
Daugherty have combined for four of five possible Northeast-10
Conference Freshman of the Week honors, as well as a Player of the
Week honor for each.
Freshman net-minder, Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee,
MA), has broken onto the Northeast-10 Conference scene
with a conference-best 9.85 saves per game and a pair of shut-outs
in 13 appearances. Bergquist is also one win shy of tying the
program record for goalkeeper wins in a season set by Amy Larrabee
’07 in 2006.
The Warriors look to improve their conference standing with a pair
of road contests at Assumption College on Saturday, October 3 at
4:00pm and #8 Bentley University on Wednesday, October 7 at 7:00pm
