NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Following a record-setting 13-win season and impressive 8-1 mark at Warrior Field, the Merrimack field hockey Warriors look to carry momentum through the off-season after the program's first ever trip to the Conference semifinals.
Anchored by a trio of 30-point scorers (Jaclyn Germano, Jen Otis and April Daugherty), the Warriors also set a program mark for goals in a season (64). The freshman Daugherty was duly named the Conference Rookie of the Year, while Otis joined her on the All-Rookie Team and Germano earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team.
Perhaps the highlight of the year was an overtime road win at Southern Connecticut. While Merrimack trailed 2-1 at the half, the Warriors rallied for a goal with 50 seconds remaining on the clock to send the game into overtime. Less than one minute into extra time, Otis lofted a shot over the goalie on Merrimack's first offensive possession. The win was the third of six straight Merrimack would win in the month of September-also setting a program record.
Setting five single-season records in just her first year, freshman Kerri Bergquist notched 13 wins while accumulating a conference-best 196 saves in net, second in the nation in terms of saves per game (9.33). Bergquist also tallied double-digit saves on ten occasions, including a season-high 17 against East Stroudsburg.
Head Coach Anne Rounce was understandably proud of her team's accomplishments, but also optimistic of the future of Merrimack field hockey.
"We obviously have a lot to be proud of, for what we accomplished as a team this year," Rounce said following her second season as head coach. "The most important thing is that we 1) had fun with the sport that we have all grown to love; 2) played with a love and passion for the game and 3) showed that we could play as a team for a full 70 minutes."
The field hockey team begins their off-season training regimen this month with Strength & Conditioning Coach Mike Kamal before individual workouts in the spring to gear up for the 2010 season.
