SENIORS CLANCY, FERGUSON, HUBBARD TO REPRESENT MERRIMACK AT 2013 NATIONAL BOWL
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College football team will send three representatives to Miami this weekend, as seniors Joe Clancy (Newburyport, Mass.), Shane Ferguson (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) and Michael Hubbard (Wakefield, Mass.) will participate in the 2013 National Bowl Game this Sunday (Dec. 8) at Alfonso Field at Florida International University (FIU) Stadium.
The three seniors were driving forces behind one of Merrimack's best season in five years, as the Warriors finished with seven victories for the first time since 2009. Each player will have the opportunity to both represent the Navy and Gold and showcase their elite talents against the best Division I (FCS), II and III players in the country in front of pro scouts from various leagues and affiliations.
Clancy became the first student-athlete in Northeast-10 Conference history to pass for over 4,000 yards in a single season. He led the conference and ranked second in the country in passing yards (4116) and passing yards per game (374.2), while leading the nation in passing touchdowns (48), completions (396) and completion percentage (64.4%), while ranking first or second in the nation in multiple offensive categories. The Newburyport, Mass., native also was named a Harlon Hill Trophy Regional Finalist and earned NE-10 and New England Football Writers Association Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The leader of a sturdy Merrimack offensive line that yielded just 16 sacks on the season, Hubbard earned a spot in the National Bowl after another outstanding seasonguiding the Warriors in the trenches this fall. The offensive line was responsible for helping Merrimack post some of the offensive numbers both in the conference and in the country. For his efforts, Hubbard also earned a spot on the NE-10 All-Conference First Team.
Finally, Ferguson finished the year with 100 catches – the second-highest total in single-season program history – while putting up 863 yards and nine touchdowns. Those numbers ranked near the top of both the conference and national leader boards, as one of Clancy's favorite targets finished the year averaging 8.6 yards per catch and 78.5 yards per contest.
About The National Bowl
The Fourth Annual National Bowl Game presented by East Preps is set for Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium this Sunday, Dec. 8, on the campus of Florida International University. The National Bowl Game is an annual post-season college football all-star game consisting of top players from Non-FBS schools.
The National Bowl is the only elite Non-FBS post-season all-star game that sees scouts from several NFL teams along with the CFL, and arena leagues. The bowl rosters are unique in that they give the NFL, CFL, and additional scouts a chance to view and get to know some of the best players from smaller schools many college football fans may not have even heard of. This year the National Bowl will be head coached by award winning and 18-year NFL veteran Coach Mike Stock formerly of the Green Bay Packers while another team will be headed by Coach Chris Thompson of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks, who is a veteran pro arena head coach with AFL experience. Former NFL defensive back Jerron Wishom who played for four NFL teams will assist with coaching while seven-year NFL veteran Running Back of the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins Donnell Bennett Jr. will also assist with coaching giving this year's game a star studded coaching lineup.
