Five Warriors receive Preseason All-American Accolades
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Five Merrimack football players have been named Division II Preseason All-Americans by USA football news.
The Warriors had three preseason All-Americans on the offensive side of the ball, senior running back Jimon Hill (North Chicago, Ill.), wide receiver Isaiah Voegeli (Hyannis, Mass.) and tackle Zach Gilbert (Salem, Mass.), and two on the defensive side, Michael Wiggins (Dolton, Ill.) and Artis Holt (Baltimore, MD).
Hill started all ten games for the Warriors in 2011 and was named second team All-Conference. He was the Warriors leading rusher with 858 yards and nine touchdowns while also recording 16 catches for 148 yards on the season.
Voegeli received first team All-Conference accolades as a junior after turning in one of the best seasons in school history for a wide receiver. Voegeli finished the season with 59 catches, 1,251 yards and 14 touchdowns. Voegeli was also a threat as a punt returner as he finished the season with an average of 17.3 yards per return and one touchdown.
Gilbert stared all ten games for the Warriors and was named to the All-Conference first team as a junior in 2011. He was the cornerstone of an offensive line that allowed only 20 sacks and paved the way for the most explosive offense in the Northeast-10 Conference.
Wiggins started nine games for the Warriors in 2011 and received second team All-Conference recognition after leading the team in sacks with 7.5 and tackles for a loss with 13.5. Wiggins was also second on the team in total tackles with 66.
Holt earned first team All-Conference accolades as a junior after compiling 33 tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. Holt was also dynamic in the return game as he averaged 29.7 yards per kick return including an 81 yard return touchdown against New Haven.
The Warriors 2012 season kicks off on September 1 as they will travel to New Haven to take on the defending Northeast-10 Conference champions.
