Football Opens Up Preseason Activities On Wednesday
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Led by 5th-year head coach John Perry, the Merrimack football team officially opened the 2012 campaign with the beginning of preseason camp on Wednesday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field.
The Warriors returned on Sunday morning for preseason and had a mini training camp at Cushing Academy for three days before returning to Merrimack this afternoon.
The Warriors return a core of contributors to a team that went 6-4 overall and 5-3 in Northeast-10 Conference play. Merrimack will have its work cut out early on as they open the season at defending conference champions New Haven. The Warriors then will host perennial powers American International and Southern Connecticut State early on in September.
While the program graduated a significant number of players from 2011, there certainly is a strong returning core that will revolve around leading running back from last season, Jimon Hill (North Chicago, Ill.) and preseason All-American wide receiver Isaiah Voegeli (Hyannis, Mass.). The Warriors will also rely on first year starting quarterback Joe Clancy () to run the explosive offense. Defensively, Michael Wiggins (Dolton, Ill.) and Artis Holt (Baltimore, MD) will look to hold down opposing offenses by pressuring the quarterback and forcing turnovers.
The 2012 season begins Saturday, September 1 as the Warriors will travel to West Haven, CT to take on the New Haven Chargers.
