Men's Rugby Wins at Stonehill 30-22 to Remain Undefeated
SOUTH EASTON, MA - The men's rugby team (2-0, 2-0 Rugby Northeast) won their second straight match on Friday at Stonehill College (0-2), 30-22.
Despite being riddled with penalties, the Warriors pulled off the road win behind tries from three different players. Senior flanker Eric Gay (Kingston, MA) scored off a scrum, while Joe Tremblay and senior Tyler Wimberly (North Sudbury, MA) each tallied a try.
Sophomore Stephen Diamantopoulas (Dracut, MA) scored two conversions along with two penalty goals. Diego Austin added a conversion and penalty goal of his own.
"We had a great push and we were winning almost every ruck," said captain Matt Kirkham (Haverhill, MA). "Our backs played smart and nifty, and our forwards were fearlessly banging through Stonehill's front line the entire game."
Merrimack returns to the field on Sunday, October 9th when they host Providence College for the Warroirs home-opener at noon on the newly renamed Martone-Mejail Field at Merrimack College. For the next three Sundays in October, the team will kick off at Martone-Mejail Field against Rugby Northeast rivals.
