How It Happened

After a scoreless first inning, Merrimack jumped on top first with an unearned run in the top of the second. With two outs and a runner on second, sophomore Bobby Losanno (Peabody, Mass.) tallied the Warriors' first run of the day as he scored off a failed pickoff attempt. An inning later, the Skyhawks responded with an unearned run by Brian Campell, in the bottom of the third, to tie the visitors at one.

As the Warriors went down in the order of the fourth, Stonehill recorded three runs off four hits to take a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth. However, it wasn't long until Merrimack exploded with four runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 5-4.

In the top of the sixth, Merrimack tacked on another run after a double to left center by Newton to allow sophomore Sean O'Neill (Norwood, Mass.) to score, giving Merrimack a 6-4 lead.

Shortly after, Stonehill took advantage of freshman pitcher Joe Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) by recording three runs to push ahead, 7-6, heading into the top of the seventh. An inning later, the Skyhawks tacked an insurance run to secure an 8-6 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Merrimack's rally began with a double to left field by Newton before a single to right by senior CJ Flannery (Hudson, Mass.). With no outs and runners on first and third, senior Alex Ciullo (Fall River, Mass.) tallied the Warriors seventh and final run of the game after a sacrifice bunt. The late push was not enough as Stonehill's Armand Rugel ended the threat with back-to-back groundouts.

Inside the Numbers

  • Freshman Cam DiSarcina (Shirley, Mass.) and Ciullo tallied two hits each while DiSarcina posted a team-high three RBI.
  • Velozo tallied his second loss of the season as he allowed seven runs off 11 hits while tallying a strikeout over five innings.
  • Stonehill finished the afternoon with a 13-of-33 effort at the plate as well as recorded seven RBI and three strikeouts.
  • The Warriors left four runners on base compared to the Skyhawks nine.
