Baseball Tackles AIC Thursday, Opens Northeast Division Play vs. Saint Anselm Saturday


NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team continues Northeast-10 Conference action with a Southwest Division battle against American International on Thursday night before opening up Northeast Division play with a three-game series against Saint Anselm. All games are scheduled to play at Haverhill Stadium in Haverhill, Mass.

Last Time Out

The Warriors posted a 3-3 record during a six-game trip along the East Coast last week, as well as opening up conference play over the weekend. Sophomore Frank Crinella (Springfield,Mass.) led Merrimack's offense with a .429 (12-of-28) effort at the plate, including a .679 slugging percentage, four doubles, six RBI and six runs scored.

Last Thursday, the Warriors fell to Queens (N.Y.), 5-2, before falling to Felciain, 5-3, on Friday. The following day, Merrimack swept Southern Connecticut State taking game one by a 6-0 decision before defeating the Owls, 10-6, in 12 innings in Yaphank, N.Y.

Junior Joe Carnevale (East Providence, R.I.) improved to 2-1 on the season as he helped Merrimack defeat the Owls in game one.  The junior righty threw a complete-game, seven hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks.

On Sunday, the Warriors were defeated by New Haven, 13-1, in the opener and rebounded back to take the nightcap 10-3. Freshman Perry Kulaga (Lincroft, N.J.) earned his first career win for Merrimack in Sunday's win over the Chargers. Kulaga allowed one run on three hits and struck out five while throwing a seven inning game. 

The Warriors:

  • Crinella currently ranks fifth in the Northeast-10 with a .393 batting average and 14 RBI.
  • The Merrimack bullpen leads the league in shutouts with two while posting a 3.43 ERA.
  • On offense, the Warriors have a .342 slugging percentage and are posting a .365 on base percentage, which ranks them third in the conference.
  • In NE-10 action, Merrimack has totaled 23 RBI, 46 hits, 27 runs and three home runs.
  •  Senior Tyler Cuming (Red Bank, N.J.) is tied second in the conference, with Stonehill's Armand Rugel, with four saves.

Scouting the American International Yellow Jackets:

  • American International was chosen to finish sixth according to the preseason coaches' poll.
  • The Yellow Jackets have lost their last six games and are currently 0-4 in NE-10 conference play.
  • Senior outfielder Dan Asselin leads the Yellow Jackets with 17 hits, four doubles, eight RBI and a .347 batting average.
  • Sophomore righty Harrison Paige holds a 1-1 record over 21.2 innings of work while allowing 19 hits, seven runs and 18 strikeouts.
  • AIC's bullpen has a 5.32 ERA while striking out 112 batsmen.

Scouting the Saint Anselm Hawks: (as of 3/26/14)

  • Mike Hayden leads the NE-10 and the Hawks with a .488 batting averages as well as tallying three home runs.
  • As a team, the Hawks have a .221 batting average and a .316 on base percentage.
  • Pitcher Zachary Brown has a 2.51 ERA while allowing 24 hits, nine runs, 30 strikeouts in 28.2 innings of work.
  • Saint Anselm's bullpen currently ranks second the league in strikeout with 141.
  • The Hawks rank third in the league with six home runs.
