Brown Named NE-10 Rookie of the Week; Baseball 8th in Regional Poll

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After his first collegiate home run – a grand slam, nonetheless – helped the Merrimack baseball team take the opening game of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Caldwell en route to an eight-RBI week, freshman first baseman Matt Brown (Belmont, Mass.) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon.

Brown enjoyed a dominant three-game weekend for the Warriors, finishing 6-for-11 with four runs and the aforementioned grand slam to post a team-leading eight RBI. The infielder also led the Warriors in slugging (.818) and ranked second in on-base percentage (.583) during that span.

A seven-game starter so far this season, Brown has not missed a beat in his first collegiate season. The rookie ranks second among all starters with a .423 batting average on the year (11-for-26), and has totaled six runs and 13 RBI, as well. Brown ranks second on the season in slugging percentage (.538) and owns an on-base percentage of .464. Finally, the Belmont, Mass., native is perfect in the field through 54 chances (53 putouts, 1 assist) this spring.

Also earning a spot on the weekly Honor Roll was senior outfielder Mark O'Flynn (Ipswich, Mass.). O'Flynn enjoyed a stellar week at the plate, batting .474 with a .600 on-base percentage while plating three runs and drawing six walks. He also was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.

Finally, the Warriors continue to draw respect from regional writers thanks to their 9-5 record. Merrimack moved into eighth place in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Poll, ahead of ninth-place Pace and 10th-place University of Sciences.

The Warriors open up Northeast-10 play this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders in western Massachusetts. On Saturday (March 23), Merrimack takes on Assumption before facing AIC a day later. Both days are slated to begin at 12 p.m.
