WORCESTER, MA- The Merrimack baseball team absorbed a 10-2 non-league loss at Assumption Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors move to 17-19 while the Greyhounds improve to 10-19 with the result.
Alan Pastyrnak (Bristol, CT) led Merrimack at the dish with a pair of base hits and one run scored. Joe Burnham (Woburn, MA) also collected two hits in the contest. Mark O'Flynn (Ipswich, MA) and Alex Ciullo (Fall River, MA) each drove in one RBI on the day.
In his first start of the season, Chris Pinette (Norwood, MA) tossed five innings and allowed two earned runs while fanning five batters. Brian Wolfendale (Methuen, MA), Tyler Cuming (Red Bank, NJ) and Matt Solar (Sterling, MA) all pitched one inning of relief. Cuming and Solar each picked up one strikeout in the game.
The Warriors plated the first run of the afternoon in the top of the first inning. Alan Pastyrnak led off with a double and came around to score on a groundout by O'Flynn.
Merrimack doubled its lead to 2-0 in the second as Ciullo's sacrifice fly to left allowed Eddie Newton (North Billerica, MA) to tag up and cross the plate.
Assumption tallied four runs in the second to claim a 4-2 edge. Kelvin Sims, Ysander Figueroa and Michael Filice all picked up RBIs in the inning and Travis Smith scored on an error. The Greyhounds added a pair of runs in the third as Nick Napoli belted a two-run homer to left.
Sims drove in the hosts' lone run of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center after Smith tripled with one out. Assumption tacked on a run in the sixth to move ahead 8-2. Filice plated his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Greyhounds wrapped up the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Smith laced a single up the middle to drive in Shane Keddy and Filice.
The Warriors return home and will look to capture their fifth-straight win at their home diamond as they host American International April 19.
