MOREHEAD CITY, NC- The Merrimack baseball team earned a 7-4 victory in the first game of the opening doubleheader of the year and suffered a 4-3 loss in the nightcap against Molloy at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City, NC. The Warriors begin the season 1-1 on the year while the Lions move to 2-1 overall.
Mark O'Flynn (Ipswich, MA) reached base on all five plate appearances in game one. O'Flynn collected two singles and scored a pair of runs, including stealing home. In his first game as a Warriors, Alan Pastyrnak (Bristol, CT) went 1-for-5 with two runs batted in a three stolen bases.
Joe Mantoni (Northbridge, MA) picked up the win on the hill as he pitched five innings with three strikeouts while allowing four hits. Chris Pinette (Norwood, MA) worked three innings in relief action and Brett Julian (Weymouth, MA) closed to game to earn the save.
In game two, the Lions scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to claim the 4-3 win.
Joe Carnevale (East Providence, RI) went six innings and fanned six batters in his first collegiate start on the mound while letting up one run.
O'Flynn finished the game with two base hits and one run scored. Casey Cotter (North Hampton, NH) drove in all three runs for Merrimack in the nightcap with a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
"I thought we did a good job of competing and playing hard today," said head coach Jim Martin. "It was good for us to get a win in the first game of the season."
The Warriors resume action February 19 with non-conference games against Southern Connecticut State and Felician.
