Baseball Edged by Franklin Pierce 8-6 Monday

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack baseball team had runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth innings, but they could not tie it up, losing to Franklin Pierce 8-6 Monday afternoon at Warrior Field.

In the eighth, Mike Andre roped a lead-off double off the right-field wall, but Jeff Bercume and Mike Dooling both grounded out, and reliever Rob Nicholas struck out Matt Hogan to end the threat.

Ed Medeiros led off the seventh with a double to right-center, and after a fly out and then a walk from Bob McCarthy, Nicholas got P.J. Farnham to hit into a double play to end the inning.

Cliff Hicks then extended the Ravens’ lead to two with a leadoff homer to begin the ninth, while Ingui followed with a two-out, two-run blast off reliever Dylan Ellis.

The Warriors never quit, as Andrew Johnson singled home Brendan Pyburn, who drilled a lead-off triple over the centerfielder’s head to start the ninth. With two outs and two on, Mike Coppinger walked, loading the bases and sending Bercume to the plate as the tying run, and Bercume dropped a single to right-center, driving home two and cutting the lead to 8-6. But Nicholas retired Dooling on a groundout to second that featured an excellent pick from first baseman Steve Carr.

Franklin Pierce jumped out early getting one in the first and three in the second, capped off with a two-run double from Ingui.

Merrimack responded with one in its half of the second as Medeiros delivered with a sacrifice fly, scoring Dooling, who led off the second with a single to right.

They added two in the fourth as Pyburn hit a sac fly to plate Bercume, who led off with a single, while Medeiros drove home his second run in as many innings with a two-out single to left-center.

Chris Pinette (2-4) took the loss, as the right-hander allowed six runs (three earned) in 8.1 innings.

Alex Szymanski (2-1) picked up the win for Franklin Pierce, as the southpaw scattered three runs in six innings. Nicholas earned his fourth save with 2.2 innings of relief.

Merrimack (12-17, 3-11 NE-10) hosts Southern Connecticut State University Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Warrior Field.
