Hogan Leads Baseball to Split with Saint Anselm

Game 1 Box / Game 2 Box

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Four hits in the first game from Matt Hogan led the Merrimack baseball team to a split with Saint Anselm Thursday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The Warriors took game one 7-3 before losing the second game 6-2.

In the first game, they pounded out 12 hits, breaking open the game with three runs in the seventh to snap a six-game losing streak.

In the seventh, P.J. Farnham’s single, coupled with a throwing error, brought home Hogan with the first run. Tim Curran then followed with single to left to score Farnham. After an infield single from Jeff Bercume and a walk from Mike Dooling, Mike Andre drew a bases-loaded walk to extend Merrimack’s lead to 6-2.

Hogan then drilled a triple to right-center in the eighth and came home on Steve Buitkus’ second RBI of the game.

Hogan pounded out four hits in as many at-bats, his first career four-hit game, while Dooling added two hits, including a triple to right-center, and scored twice.

Mike Riley (1-1) earned his first collegiate win with seven strong innings. The right-hander struck out eight, a career-high, and allowed three runs (two earned), including a homer to center field off the bat of Matt Sucharewicz. Ryan McNeil pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season.

Merrimack led 2-0 in game two but surrendered two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh en route to a 6-2 loss to the Hawks, who were the home team for the second game.

An RBI single from Bercume in the third brought home Farnham with the game’s first run, while a RBI single from Hogan, his fifth hit of the day, plated pinch-runner Mike Coppinger in the sixth.

But the Hawks recovered, tying the game in the sixth and taking the lead in the seventh, after four of the first five Hawks reached base and scored, three on doubles and one on a throwing error.

Dylan Ellis (4-2) took the loss for Merrimack, as the lefty struck out five in seven innings but gave up six runs and six hits.

Merrimack (11-14, 2-9 NE-10) hosts two-time reigning regional champion Franklin Pierce Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon at Warrior Field.
