Baseball Edged by Bentley 4-3
WALTHAM, MA – The Merrimack baseball team dropped a 4-3
non-conference game to Bentley University Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors led 3-1 into the seventh inning, but the Falcons
rallied, tying the game with two in the seventh and winning it with
one in the ninth.
In the ninth, Brett Damato hit a one-out single off Joe
Connors, stole second and scored on a walk-off single by
James Roche.
Merrimack started strong, scoring twice in the first.
Brendan Pyburn led off with a double, went to
third on a single by Ray Walker, and stole home on
a double steal to give the visitors the lead. Tim
Curran followed with a single to plate Walker with the
game’s second run.
In the third, Pyburn led off with a single, his second hit in as
many at-bats and scored on a RBI single from Jeff
Bercume.
Mike Riley got the start for the Warriors, allowing one
run and three hits, while striking out four in 5.2 innings. But the
Warrior bullpen faltered, allowing three runs in the final 2.2
innings on six hits.
Dean Sandonato got the win in relief for Bentley, hurling two
shutout innings. Connors took the loss for Merrimack, his first
collegiate defeat.
Merrimack (9-6, 0-1 NE-10) finishes its three-game series at
Bentley at 3:30 p.m. in a conference game.
