Baseball Sweeps Philadelphia with 16-3 Victory
PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Merrimack baseball team swept
Philadelphia Sunday earning a 16-3 victory to conclude a 13-game
season-opening road trip.
Merrimack returns home with a 9-4 record and is scheduled to host
Bentley Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Warrior Diamond.
The Warriors put this one away early scoring seven times in the
first inning. After a leadoff double from Brendan Pyburn,
Jeff Bercume drove him home with a single. After Bercume
stole second, Andrew Johnson doubled the
centerfielder home for the second run. Following a walk from
Tim Curran, Mike Andre scored Johnson with a
single. Ed Medeiros kept the inning alive by
reaching on an error, scoring Andre and Curran, and P.J.
Farnham ended the pitcher’s day with a run-scoring
single. In his second at-bat of the inning, Pyburn delivered his
second extra base hit of the day with a two-run triple for
Merrimack’s sixth and seventh run.
Merrimack added three runs in the fourth and sixth inning, while
tallying single runs in the second, seventh and eighth.
Andre finished with four hits in as many at-bats, while scoring
three times and drove in two runs. Curran and Mike
Dooling scored three times each, while Medeiros drove in
three runs. Farnham added a pair of RBIs as six different Warriors
had multiple hits in the win.
Dylan Ellis (2-1) earned the win, striking out
nine in six innings of work. Mike Coppinger, Joe
Connors, and Bill Humphrey each threw an
inning to preserve the win.
