4:00 pm: Merrimack Warriors vs. Providence Friars

This match-up is the first of two games being held at the home of the 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox. Come out and support the Warriors as they take on Hockey East foe Providence College in a truly unique game experience.

Merrimack College will participate in Citi Frozen Fenway 2014, taking on Providence College on Jan. 4, 2014, in the program's first-ever game played at historic Fenway Park.

This will mark Merrimack's first outdoor game since 1986, when the Warriors battled UConn outdoors at the Huskies' home rink in Storrs, Conn.

Eight Hockey East teams in all will play at Fenway over a span of two weekends.

Notre Dame and Boston College will join Merrimack and Providence for a doubleheader on Jan. 4 that features all Catholic schools. The following weekend, Northeastern will take on UMass Lowell while BU battles Maine on Jan. 11, 2014.

For Merrimack, the Fenway showdown marks a continuation of its longest-played rivalry in program history. Providence represents the Warriors' most-frequent opponent over the 57-year history of the program. The contest at Fenway will mark the 120th career matchup between the schools.

Frozen Fenway/Merrimack Outdoor History

There has been plenty of history made by the Warriors in recent years, including a trip to the Hockey East Championship in 2010 and the team’s first-ever No. 1 national ranking a year later; Saturday’s contest will continue that trend, as the Navy and Gold partake in what has become a bi-annual tradition in Boston for the first time in program history.

In 2010, when the city of Boston hosted the National Hockey League's Winter Classic pitting the Boston Bruins against the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway, the powers at be kept the outdoor rink intact for a few more days, as Boston College and Boston University faced off in the first installment of Frozen Fenway.

Two years later, the event returned in January of 2012, as six schools - Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, UMass and Vermont - all enjoyed the outdoor hockey spectacle inside one of the most historic sporting venues in the country.

This weekend, Frozen Fenway once again returns to Boston with more anticipation and grandeur than ever before, as the nearly three-week event expands to include teams at the high school, Division III, Atlantic Hockey and Division I women's levels.

But the main event, once again, includes two Hockey East doubleheaders, starting with Merrimack-Providence on Saturday afternoon. Later that day, Boston College and Notre Dame - the league's newest addition - will square off; the following weekend, UMass Lowell, Northeastern, Boston University and Maine all will take to the ice to conclude the third installment of Frozen Fenway.

For the Warriors, Saturday's showdown marks their first outdoor game in a quarter of a century. The only previous occasions that saw Merrimack battle an opponent outdoors was when the Warriors competed against the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn.

In fact, Merrimack played UConn outdoors three times during the 1980s, when UConn's home games were played at a partially covered outdoor rink near old Memorial Stadium. Merrimack won all three meetings, with the last outdoor showdown occurring on Feb. 18, 1988 (a 9-0 Merrimack victory), more than 25 years ago.

Inside The Series: Merrimack/Providence

Making Saturday's Frozen Fenway matchup that much more meaningful is the fact that Providence represents Merrimack's most frequently played opponent in school history - dating all the way back to February of 1960.

Merrimack-Providence All-Time Series Facts

  • The two sides will meet for the 120th time on Saturday
  • The first-ever showdown between the two schools occurred on Feb. 13, 1960, at the Billerica Forum (7-1 Providence victory)
  • Merrimack's first-ever victory against Providence came on Feb. 11, 1967 (9-1) at Frost Arena
  • The Friars hold the all-time edge (80-30-9) but Merrimack owns a 2-3-1 record against Providence over the last six meetings
  • The Warriors will be looking for some vengeance after Providence swept the season series earlier this year with a 1-0 victory at Lawler Rink on on Nov. 8 before a 4-2 decision the next night at Schneider Arena
