Dean O’Keefe enters his seventh year at Merrimack and fourth as the Senior Associate Athletic Director. He served as the Interim Director of Athletics during the 2012-13 academic year after previously spending two years as the Associate Athletic Director, during which he was responsible for running the day-to-day aspects of the department.
Under O’Keefe, who also serves as an adjunct professor in the College’s Sports Management Department, Merrimack continues to operate as one of the top Division II programs in the region, now offering 24 varsity sports entering the 2014-15 academic year.
Merrimack's Division I men's and women's ice hockey teams, meanwhile, continue to succeed at their respective levels, with the latter gaining traction toward its first varsity season in 2015-16.
O’Keefe also handles all administrative duties for football, men's basketball, women's basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, cross country, track & field, men's lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, women’s crew and women’s golf.
O'Keefe also oversees the department’s scholarship budget, which underwent significant alterations recently to provide increased opportunities as Merrimack added track & field, crew, golf, swimming and women's hockey at the varsity level. O'Keefe has also been instrumental in growing the club sport program at Merrimack.
Formerly the Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations in 2010-11, O'Keefe helped Merrimack set a record for single-season attendance at Lawler Arena that winter, selling out 11 of 16 home men's ice hockey games, while ticket revenue nearly doubled in 2010-11 from 2009-10. Merrimack also brought in more money than ever before from sponsorships and fundraising efforts.
Prior to joining Merrimack, O’Keefe spent six years at the
Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. as the Vice President
of Marketing & Sales. He was responsible for marketing, sales,
advertising, public relations and special events for all facets of
He has also spent six years at Six Flags New England as the Director of Marketing, the Senior Marketing Manager, and the Promotions Manager. O’Keefe has also worked for the 1996 Olympic Soccer Organizing Committee, World Cup U.S.A. in 1994, and interned at the NBA in Corporate Communications.
A 1994 graduate of Stonehill College, O’Keefe won three Northeast-10 Championships as a starter on the men’s soccer team before graduating with a degree in American Studies with a minor in Communications. He earned his Master of Arts in Education, with a Sports Management major from the University of Connecticut in 1996.
O’Keefe and his wife Candace, have two children, Siobhan and Seamus, and reside in West Newbury, Mass.
