Da Costa, Loiseau, Mency Finalists for Male Athlete of the Year

NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Stephane Da Costa (Paris, France), Shawn Loiseau (Shrewsbury, MA), and Dee Mency (Hagerstown, MD) have been named finalists for the 2010-11 Merrimack Male Athlete of the Year.

Da Costa became the first hockey All-American since 1999, leading the Warriors to their winningest Division I season, their first Hockey East Championship appearance and their first NCAA Tournament game since 1988. He led Hockey East in assists per game, was an All-New England honoree and a second-team all-conference selection. Leading Merrimack in assists, points and shots, Da Costa became the first Merrimack player to reach the NHL since 2005 as he signed with Ottawa in April. 

Loiseau earned second team All-American honors as a junior on the football team. The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Defensive Player of the Year, Loiseau set the school record for tackles for the second straight season and ranked second in the country in tackles per game. The Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference selection, the junior will enter his senior season as the program’s all-time leader in tackles for a career.

Mency became the fifth men’s basketball player in program history to amass 2,000 career points, earning NABC All-American honors. A first-team Daktronics and NABC all-region selection, he was second in the conference with 20.5 points per game and led the league and was third nationally with 3.52 three-pointers per game. A unanimous Northeast-10 first-team honoree, Mency participated in the NABC Resse’s All-Star game.

Over the next two weeks, Merrimack is unveiling the finalists for its major awards online at merrimackathletics.com. The winners will all be announced at the student-athlete orientation in early September.
