NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Merrimack College welcomed its largest incoming class to campus during its annual summer orientation on June 23-26.

Over 900 of the newest Warriors joined their orientation leaders and other staff members in a two-day series of events that introduced them to life at Merrimack College. The incoming class represents the largest in the single-year history of the College, which saw its overall student body grow by over 2800 total students with the addition of the Class of 2018.

During the Monday and Wednesday evening portions of Orientation, the new students were brought to Hammel Court to learn all about Merrimack Athletics. There, 2012 alum and former softball player Alex Gallant, who serves as the department’s Director of Operations and Scheduling and oversees Club Sports, described all that encompasses being a Merrimack Warrior through a special presentation.

Gallant noted the importance of the relationships between new students and Merrimack Athletics, whether it is through playing, being a fan, or becoming involved in the athletic department. The segment featured several video clips and photos of highlights throughout the year, and at one point, rising senior Chloe Rothman of the women’s basketball team brought the crowd to its feet after effortlessly draining a half-court shot on her first try.

In the Athletics Department alone, nearly 150 new student-athletes (freshmen & transfers) will be suiting up for the Navy and Gold this fall. They will join a dedicated group of returners who helped forge an incredible academic year in 2013-14, one that saw the Athletic Department finish fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference Presidents’ Cup standings, the department’s highest finish in 10 years.

In total, the department combined for 175 overall victories, three conference crowns and four NCAA Tournament appearances – the most in a single season since the 2008-09 academic year – as well as one individual NCAA Championship qualifier.

The 2014-15 Merrimack Athletics academic year begins on Thursday, Sept. 4, when the men’s soccer team hosts Caldwell at Martone-Mejail Field at 7 p.m. to open up the 2014 Warrior Kick-Off Classic, while the women’s volleyball team also hosts Southern New Hampshire at Hammel Court at 7 p.m.
