Club Men’s Rugby Welcomes Team IMPACT Member Luke Giuffrida to Team
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College club men’s rugby team became the latest program on campus to join forces with Team IMPACT after welcoming its newest teammate, Luke Giuffrida, to the squad last week.
The Warriors welcomed Luke and his family to the team last week and over the weekend during the USA Rugby AIG Men’s Collegiate All-American Rugby Clinic at Martone-Mejail Field. He had an opportunity to meet all members of the team and its coaching staff, participated in practice and learned more about the great sport of rugby.
Making Luke’s first day even more special was his being presented a commemorative team uniform by Ruggers Rugby Supply of Springfield (Mass.).
Luke, a 7-year-old from Methuen, Massachusetts, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis two summers ago, the most common chronic, life threatening lung disease found in children. Since diagnosis, Luke's life has been dominated by treatments. He has been through numerous intense surgeries, including major lung surgery last summer. Luke is stable now, but still takes a lot medication, does chest physical therapy, and completes breathing exercises daily.
Through his camaraderie with the men’s rugby team and Team IMPACT, Luke should have plenty of fun-filled months in store for him. The team is gearing up for another great year and will use the motivation provided by Luke to make next season their most successful yet.
Team IMPACT aims to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team. They do this by matching these courageous kids with local college athletic teams. Team IMPACT children are drafted onto the team and become an official member of the team from Draft Day through to Graduation. The child joins the athletic team and the student athletes join the child’s support team. The child gains great strength, camaraderie and support and the student athletes are taught lessons about courage, resiliency and life perspective that they can’t learn in a classroom. Through a structured relationship management methodology, we establish and cultivate these relationships to ensure a successful experience for the families and teams involved.
