COMING UP....
The 22nd-ranked men’s soccer team will host fifth-ranked
Southern NH Saturday in a matchup of regional powers. Hockey
will open conference play at BU Friday, while football heads
to Bentley on Saturday.
WARRIOR WEEKLY UPDATE...
FOOTBALL (3-3, 2-2 NE-10)
Football was upset by Saint Anselm 48-42 Friday night at Warrior
Field. J.D. Suozzo rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns, and
threw for 289 yards on 23-of-49 passing with one score. Richard
Johnson tallied 160 yards on the ground on 20 carries and caught
six balls for 60 yards. Jeremiah Watts, who leads the conference in
catches, added nine more for 131 yards.
FIELD HOCKEY (5-10, 5-9 NE-10)
Kelly Pasquantonio, Stephanie Glazier and Jessica DeLacey each
scored in a 3-0 win over Assumption on Monday afternoon. DeLacey
and Jaclyn Germano both scored in a 3-2 loss to #10 Saint
Michael’s on Wednesday. UMass Lowell blanked the Warriors 5-0
on Saturday, resulting in a 1-2 week for Anne Rounce’s
squad.
#22 MEN’S SOCCER (9-2-2, 6-2-1 NE-10)
Merrimack earned revenge from last year’s Northeast-10
Championship game, defeating Southern Connecticut 4-1 Saturday.
Greg Motta, Matt Sanderson, Martin Gabadian and Wayne Sygrove all
scored with Sygrove and Sanderson also earning assists.
WOMEN’S SOCCER (8-2-2, 6-2-1 NE-10)
The Merrimack women’s soccer team picked up its sixth win in
seven matches Saturday, defeating Southern Connecticut State
University 1-0 at Warrior Field. Merrimack struck early, as Kerri
Domohowski lobbed a shot off goaltender Katie DiDio into the back
corner of net for her second of the season, unassisted. That was
enough for goalkeeper Shannon Rowan, who stopped seven shots in
goal for the clean sheet. The Owls out shot Merrimack 16-11 in the
game, forcing Rowan to make five second-half saves.
VOLLEYBALL (10-7, 5-0 NE-10)
The Merrimack volleyball team proved it will be a major factor in
the conference and region with a convincing 3-0 win over rival and
preseason conference favorite Bentley Tuesday night at the Volpe
Gym. Game scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-23. Ale Kuncaitis led the
way with 15 kills, 16 digs, and two service aces, while hitting
.351. Molly Cindric added 11 kills and seven digs, while Elyse
Lorenz added a double-double on 42 assists and 10 digs. Merrimack
hit .298 overall and committed just 11 attack errors, while getting
seven service aces to just one for Bentley. The Falcons’ loss
is just their third NE-10 regular season loss since 2005 (49
matches).
CROSS COUNTRY
The Merrimack men’s and women’s cross country teams
competed at the New England Championships Saturday at Franklin
Park.The men, led by Jefferson Welch and Adam Holmes, placed 33rd
overall while the women’s team finished 38th. Ashley Sarris
led the way for the women, finishing 164th in a time of 20:09.
Right behind her was Katelyn Meagher, who placed 195th in
20:29.
TENNIS
The Merrimack women's tennis team concluded the fall portion of its
schedule with a seventh place finish at the New England
Championships. Stellina Saia placed fifth in the #2 singles
tournament, while freshman Courtney Garvey was fourth at #6
singles.
HOCKEY (1-0, 0-0 HEA)
Francois Ouimet scored twice and J.C. Robitaille tallied the
game-winner as hockey won on opening night 3-1 Saturday over Robert
Morris. Merrimack killed off all nine short-handed situations.
SUOZZO AND O’BRIEN EARN WEEKLY HONORS
Freshman quarterback J.D. Suozzo was named the Northeast-10 Player
and Freshman of the Week Monday. In addition, Mike O’Brien
earned the Defensive Player of the Week Honors. O’Brien also
earned D2Football.com National Defensive Player of the Week
honors.
STOLLERY AND CANNATA AMONG TOP RECRUITS IN INCH
RANKINGS
Freshmen Karl Stollery and Joe Cannata have been included among the
top incoming recruits according to Inside College Hockey. Cannata,
who spent last season with the U.S.A. Under-18 Development Team, is
ranked seventh among incoming goaltenders and second among incoming
Hockey East goaltenders. Stollery, who led the Camrose Kodiaks to
two straight AJHL and Doyle Cup Championships, is slated 19th among
incoming defensemen and fifth among Hockey East blue liners.
DUNCAN NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
Junior guard Darren Duncan has been named a preseason All-American
by The Sporting News in their Division II College Basketball
preview magazine. Duncan was a NABC All-District first ream
selection, a Northeast-10 All-Conference first team honoree, and a
Second Team Daktronics All-Region selection in 2007-08. He averaged
17.7 points per game, fifth in the Northeast-10 and 7.2 assists per
game, first in the conference and seventh in the nation. He enters
the 2008-09 season just 94 points shy of 1,000 career.
