VOTE NOW: 2012-13 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior Alejandro Fuchs (Caracas, Venezuela), junior Jordan Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan) and senior  Joe Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) have been tabbed finalists for the 2012-13 Merrimack Athletics Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.

Fans are encouraged to cast their vote on Facebook to help determine the winner! Please note that vote counts on Facebook are not the final determinant of the eventual winner.

Each winner will be unveiled at the annual Merrimack College Leadership, Education, Athletics and Development (LEAD) Awards on April 23 at 4 p.m. at the Rogers Center.

Get To Know The Nominees

Alejandro Fuchs (Men's Soccer)
Senior | Caracas, Venezuela| Business Major

The senior captain was a force on all ends of the field, anchoring a defensive unit that set the program’s single-season record with just 12 goals allowed while leading Merrimack to the program’s first Northeast-10 Championship in 15 years and first NCAA Tournament appearance and victory. He tallied two game-winning goals, including the only goal in the 1-0 NCAA Tournament victory over Franklin Pierce. He was a first-team all-conference selection, a NSCAA All-East Region honoree and a NE-10 All-Academic honoree with a 3.41 GPA as a business major.

Jordan Heywood (Men's Hockey)
Junior | Regina, Saskatchewan| Civil Engineering Major

The junior captain was second on the team with 21 points and was named to the Hockey East All-Conference second team. He was the runner-up for the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman and ranked fourth in Hockey East in scoring among defensemen. He maintains a 3.6 GPA and is a two-time all-academic team honoree.

Joe Mantoni (Baseball)
Senior | Northbridge, Mass.| Economics/Mathematics Major

The senior designated hitter and right-handed pitcher is batting .289 with 11 doubles, a team-best 28 RBI and a .454 slugging %. On the hill, Mantoni serves as the closer and leads the team with four saves while posting a 2.03 ERA (fourth among non-starters). Mantoni has struck out 17 while walking just four over 13.1 IP, while posting a 4.0 GPA in the fall.

Over the next week, Merrimack will announce the finalists for its major awards online at The winners will all be announced at the LEAD Awards on April 23 in the Rogers Center at 4 p.m.
