Merrimack Athletes Collect Toys for Lawrence Youth
North Andover, Mass. - Upon hearing that one of the Lawrence
Boys and Girls Club’s major donors for their annual holiday
toy drive would not be participating this year, members of the
Student Athlete Advisory Committee at Merrimack College voted to
hold their own toy drive to make up the difference. Each
student athlete at Merrimack committed to donating a gift, allowing
the athletic department to amass over 480 toys.
“The basketball team has given toys to the Boys and Girls
Club for years; when Coach Mike Kamal told us the Club wasn't going
to get as many toys as previous years, we decided to help out as
well,” said SAAC President Peter Schielke. “Most of us
are lucky enough to have Christmas every year, but to some kids
this is it. Everyone involved, captains, athletes, coaches
and the whole athletic department really stepped up to
help.”
Merrimack Athletics held its annual toy drive to benefit Toys for
Tots during the December 7th home hockey game against
the University of Vermont. Guests who donated a toy received
five dollars off ticket prices. Toys for Tots, sponsored by
the United States Marine Corps, distributes toys to needy children
in the respective community.
